Towing a boat along a pier or canal

This is a minimised 'Lite' page, want to see the real page?

What is the issue?
If you have to move a boat that is being serviced alongside a pier or do not wish to start the engine it is a difficult challenge. If you pull from the pier the energy draws the boat towards you continually bringing it to the harbour wall or canal bank.

Why address this?
This makes it impossible to move the boat single handed as an additional role is required to be fend off.

How to address this?
Use 'bow hauling' line set out as presented in figure 1. Towing the boat with this traditional canal boat approach makes the vessel move in a straight line parallel to the quay or canal edge.
