What is the issue?
Certain surges cause fenders to ride up and leave the topsides unprotected. Also if very rough conditions are expected fenders may not adequately protect the vessel.
Why address this?
It only takes a few minutes against a rough harbour wall for the topsides to be badly marked. Prolonged grinding on a harbour wall will cause extensive damage.
How to address this?
Protect the topsides with a hefty apron and old tyres instead of fenders as presented in figure 1. Sink one quarter to one third of the tyre so the weight of water holds it down. rnrnIf you are preparing to weather a rough season alongside connect a series of tyres together along the side. Tyres are heavy so fix them to the base of the stanchion posts as presented in figure 1 or if possible to cleats along the deck.rn
