Precautions
Preparation for the event of steering mechanism failure
What is the issue?
A steerage mechanism failure is high unlikely with tiller bases systems and if it does happen may be easily addressed. However wheel based systems add a layer of complexity to the system and many more moving parts that are subject to failure.
Why address this?
A failed steering mechanism whilst in deep ocean could present a major problem plus make a port entry challenging.
How to address this?
Notch the rudder as presented in figure 1. This enables a knotted line to be dropped into the slot to provide a very straight forward jury rig steering system.
