What is the initial fix?

This waypoint is just outside the entrance approximately half way between Robert’s Head and Cork Head, just over a nautical mile North-North-East of Daunt Rock (a submerged rock with at least 3.5 metres over it that is marked with a Red Buoy Fl (2) R.6s).

What is the story here?

Roberts Cove is a small coastal inlet that resides just over three miles southwest of the Cork Harbour entrance approximately half way between Robert’s Head and Cork Head.

This inlet provides an exposed anchorage as it is open to the south round to southeast. It offers marginal protection from south-westerly conditions, up to a Beaufort force 3-4 and after that it will tend to roll uncomfortably. However shallower draft vessels may go deeper into the cove to find more protection. In general it should be considered a fair-weather anchorage for southerly winds but it is well protected from all others quarters.

Normal navigation will see you into the cove as it has easy daylight access and there are no unmarked off lying dangers for the cruising yachtsman.

Why visit here?

Roberts Cove is picturesque place to visit and although far from being the perfect all weather anchorage it is a snug little inlet with a good landing for tenders.

It has a bar and a good restaurant that makes it well worth stopping over in favourable conditions to enjoy the stretch of coastline and a nice meal.

How to get in?

Feel your way into the cove from the initial fix until you get to a depth that is comfortable for your vessels draft, then anchor in sand. The shallower a vessels draft the further it can go in, the more protection the Cove provides.

What facilities are available?

There are no facilities except for a bar and restaurant and a good beach to land a dinghy.

What emergency contacts are there?

Valentia Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) VHF Ch 24 & MF 1752 kHz covers this costal area. Cork (26), Mizen (04), Bantry Bay (23), Shannon (28) and Galway (04) provide relay stations. Coastguard Radio is always called on a working channel. Emergencies are worked on 16, 67 and working channel.
