On the small 8.8 metre contour patch approximately 300 metres north of Chapel Island.
Why visit here?
This is a snug anchorage where a boat can take in views across the island-dotted Lough to the west or to the mistily distant Mourne Mountains to the south.
From a sporting perspective this is the ideal location to take in come club racing. The much used racing mark No.11 (Jackdaw) is located nearby and, with the sun behind, it is the perfect place to watch the action.
One may also land and go for a walk on Jackdaw or indeed Chapel Island from here. Please note that Jackdaw is an important nesting site for terns in the spring and should be avoided at this time.
Likewise on a quiet day, tucked away from it all behind uninhabited Jackdaw, it is easy to immerse oneself in the peaceful location. In such a place, as the location is very little changed, it is easy to cast the minds eye back a thousand years to when Viking boats passed north of here. In 1002, and subsequently again in 1149, the sleek long boats came cutting through the Loughs peaceful waters, sharp-eyed crews tense with the anticipation of imminent battle and monastic plunder; bent on Quoile Abbey.
How to get in?
Use the entries for Strangford Harbour, Audley’s Roads or Portaferry for guidance on how to approach from the Irish Sea and pass through the five nautical mile long fast-running tidal ‘Narrows’. Any of these lists of directions will guide a boat up through the ‘Narrows’ to the inner Lough.
Having entered Strangford Lough make for the Chapel Island & Jackdaw Islands Initial Fix. This places you 300 metres north of Chapel Island where you can clearly see both islands. Pass around Jackdaw Island and feel your way you’re your preferred debt to anchor in shale with good holding.

There are no facilities upon Chapel and Jackdaw Islands or in the surrounding area.
What emergency contacts are there?
Belfast Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC). Operational Area: Northern Ireland/ Irish Republic Border, Lough Foyle to Northern/Irish Republic Border Carlingford Lough. Belfast Coastguard (MRSC) VHF Ch 16, liaises closely with IRCG. Emergencies are worked on 16, 67 and working channel.
Alternatively, or if ashore, phone 999 and 112 and ask for ‘Marine Rescue’. Police, Fire and Rescue are also available on this number. Belfast (MRSC) may be contacted directly on +44 2891 463 933. An inshore lifeboat is maintained at Portaferry.
